Barcelona – a city in Spain or icon in classic mid century modern design?

Let me guess, your answer will probably be: “both”, am I correct? There is no doubt, that Barcelona is one of the most fascinating cities in Spain but let’s take a closer look at where the famous Barcelona chair and stool are coming from.

1929 was the year that Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the Barcelona Chair and Stool. It was originally created to furnish his German Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Barcelona and has come to epitomize modern design. Mies van der Rohe designed the chair to serve as seating for the king and queen of Spain, while the stool was intended to accommodate their attendants.

Now, almost 100 years later, this classic design icon is still used in many contemporary settings. And it is as beautiful as ever. In 1977, the Barcelona Chair was honored with the Museum of Modern Art Award. Well deserved is what I think.

Whether you are creating a classic modern design, a casual and contemporary space, or a midcentury modern inspired room, the Barcelona will fit right in. Try it for yourself and see.
